2010 Changes to the Back Nine

Pictures taken March 8, 2010

Holes 17 and 18 are undergoing some significant changes for Spring 2010.

The water system that maintains the ponds on 17 and 18 has been deficient for many years. Significant amounts of water has leaked from the current unlined ponds. This year, the ponds are going to be rebuilt and lined to prevent leaking and save Payson City millions of gallons of water each year.

The side benefits for the golfer include eliminating the reeds and bull rushes from the ponds and elimination or improvement of the water courses that feed the ponds.

Hole 17.

Head Pro Tracy Zobell and Course Superintendent Mark Hyland discuss plans with Payson Mayor Rick Moore and Gordon White, Payson City Water Department Director.

According to current discussions, the pond on the left will rebuilt much deeper and lined to prevent water leaking from the pond. The pond on the right will be replaced with a rock-lined water course. The walkway currently between the two ponds will be eliminated.

Hole 18 Fairway.

This fairway is also being significantly redesigned. The ditch on the left is being eliminated (because in a storm, the water caught by that ditch could overflow the ponds after they are lined and need so much less water to fill and maintain.) You can see where the willows along the ditch on the left side of the fairway have already been cut down as part of the process to eliminate that ditch. The stumps will be removed, fairway will be reshaped and new, lower trees and shrubs will be planted along that side of the fairway.

There is also discussion about planting taller trees along the right side of the fairway to define and visually separate #18 from #1 in the distance.

Hole 18 Green.

18 Green is going to become an island green. The ponds around it will be deepened, lined and enlarged. If possible, the ponds will be joined to become a single moat-style pond. If that is not possilbe due to engineering concerns, two ponds with a waterfall connection will be built. In either case, the newly lined pond will consume far less water than in the past. Also, the walkway in front of the green will be eliminated. Golfers should have a much better view of the surface of the green from the fairway.

Hole 18 Green.

The walkway from the cart path at the back of the green will be narrowed significantly which will enhance the "island green" nature of this hole.
